Life @ FASHWELL: Interview with Senior Machine Learning Engineer Marko

How long have you worked at FASHWELL?
I’ve worked here for a little over a year now.

What were you doing before this?
After earning my BSc in Computer Science, I moved on to a MSc, focussing on the application of machine learning algorithms to computer vision problems. Mainly I worked on medical image processing, like the segmentation of brain tissue in CT scans. Currently I’m working on my PhD, so I’ve also taught courses on AI, numerical algorithms and neural networks at the University of Novi Sad in Serbia where I’m from.

What intrigues you the most about FASHWELL’s technology?
I enjoy the level of accuracy our technology requires – integrating many different machine learning tasks into a single-endpoint service is a great challenge. All of our algorithms for classification, detection, segmentation, metric learning and retrieval have to be seamlessly put together in one beast with state-of-the-art performance.

What projects are you currently working on?
Currently I’m working on improving our framework for training metric learning models. This improvement will allow us train faster and at greater scale.

What do you find the most challenging?
The most exciting thing for me is making our technology better. This is a constant challenge, because we have to balance keeping up with fast-paced research while also keeping our customers in mind.

What’s your favorite part about living in Switzerland?
It’s a beautiful country with plenty of quaint places to visit, mountains to scale, slopes to ski down and fondues to eat.

What do you do in your free time?
I like getting lost in sci-fi and fantasy themed books. Watching a decent TV show and some gaming is not unknown to me :). I also recently started observing the stars with my first ever telescope!
